Collectie: Iona

Workers at the farm are also shareholders of Iona

At the Southeren point of Africa, along the Cape South Coast is the coolest wine region, the Elgin valley. The valley is completely surrounded by mountains on all four sides making it the only wine region in South Africa demarcated solely by it’s obvious natural geography. Along the Southern ridge of this valley, overlooking the Atlantic ocean at an altitude of 450m lies the unique Iona vineyards surrounded by the Enesco certified Kogelberg biosphere. Iona has the highest winery in Elgin and the coolest growing season vineyards in South Africa.
A unique phenomenon happens at Iona. The combination of the short distance from the freezing Atlantic ocean and the rapid increase in altitude causes the prevailing south east wind to roll across the vines, forming misty clouds that blanket the farm on warm days. This protects the grapes from the African sun – allowing filtered sunlight into the canopy – resulting in slow, even, optimum ripeness with perfect acidity and flavour development at moderate alcohol levels.
Clouds create filtered sunlight, reduces the canopy temperature and results in optimum growth ripening regulators. Moderate summer rainfall at 280mm, spread over the whole growing season. Low evaporation from the soil and transpiration from the vine, as well as the use of permanent cover crops keeps soils cool, making supplementary irrigation a rare occurrence. Grapes ripen in declining temperatures that result in optimal acidity, producing soft, elegant and balanced wines with a complex yet delicate aromatic profile, and are notably age worth.
Iona is situated on the last remaining portion of an ancient river valley formed during the post-glacial geomorphic activity. The soils are essentially gravel beds derived from decomposed table mountain sandstone*, sedimentary deposits and quartzite’s. Many soil scientists agree that the most important soil characteristic is the amount of moisture that the soil can store and the control of the supply thereof to the vine (Jan, 2004). The soil provides the opportunity for the vines to penetrate the deep clay underlay providing moisture and eliminating water stress. The vineyard blocks have been planted to take account of the subtle changes of soil profiles and aspects. Careful selection of variety, clones, rootstocks, planting distances, row directions and use of cover crops optimises these nuances.
The term “monopole” celebrates the fact that Iona wines are produced from grapes grown in the vineyards which they own exclusively. They don’t sell or buy in grapes. It’s also used in France, particularly, burgundy.
These wines represent the unique meso climate of the Iona Elgin highlands. This elevated plateau sitting at an average of 450m above sea level is the home to the coolest wine vineyards in the country.
People are an integral part of their success. They have 20 families living on the farm with up to 35 years of service. All vineyard practices are done by hand. Workers are shareholders and receive pension funds, education and social support. Iona would rather employ people than machines.
